Research blog: Commercial Conventions
I have chosen to create a commercial for the product Gushers! Gushers are a type of gummy snacks, that come in little yellow packs, and inside the gummies, you can find candy gel. Typically, their commercials convey that the Gushers contain 'such delicious gel' that the people who eat it crave everything that is in a gel substance. In order to observe some of the conventions in these commercials, I looked up typical Gushers commercial's and found two that I will provide the links for at the end. I was able to observe the following conventions in these two commercials.
To start, the first commercial I watched took place in a normal bathroom. There was one kid in the bathroom, and she was going up to the sink to wash her hands. All normal, right? Well, as she walks over to the soap dispenser, she suddenly bends down and squirts the soap into her mouth. Then, as if the commercial transports her back into reality again, she tramples back taken by surprise, and exclaims that the soap isn't Gusher's Gel. As this is happening, a man appears out of the bathroom stall and recites the commercial's catch line. "Hey!! Just because it 'gels' doesn't mean it 'gushes'" As the man walks back into the stall, he leaves the girl standing there looking from the pack of Gushers in her hand, back up to the soap dispenser, in confusion.
The second commercial has a similar plot. This one takes place in a locker room, with two guys getting ready. One guy grabs his hair gel, and applies it to his hair. Suddenly, the second guy runs up and licks the gel. (I know, gross right!?) Once again, he stumbles back and says that the hair gel doesn't taste like Gushers gel! Out of no where, a coach appears and exclaims the same line. "Hey!! Just because it 'gels' doesn't mean it 'gushes'!" These commercials could possibly (weirdly) occur in any normal place, any day, at any time. Although the "licking gel and soap" aspect is not a convention, the rest of the aspects in the commercial are!
