Genre Research: Horror
In this powerpoint, I researched the Genre that appealed to me the most: Horror. The first thing I researched was the lighting in horror movies, which is normally dark or dim to leave more room for the element of surprise. Camera Angles come next, where I discuss the facts that close-ups are most commonly used. This is in order to show the fear on a character's face, or maybe to conceal a monster until the last minute. In order to have a jump scare, things need to pop out at the audience, filmed from a close up shot. The next topic was the common movement in a Horror film. I wrote in greater detail to explain that zoom was the most common movement in these films, again creating the illusion of a jump scare. It also can create suspense as the movie slowly reveals a scary figure. The next slide of my powerpoint talks about "Mis-en-Scene". This could be any typical scene in a horror movie, such as a dark alley way with only one dimly-lit street light. This is the example I gave for a setting you may be able to observe in a Horror movie. I then went on to talk about common elements, or conventions, found in this genre, including scary fictional characters, provoking feelings of shock or fear, and a high sense of the "unknown". The seventh scene of my powerpoint lists examples of some of my personal favorite scary movies, like Scream and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
Some of the common sounds in a horror movie consist of creepy and suspenseful music, harsh and loud sounds when a violent scene occurs, and weird monster noises. My next two slides list the elements I like and dislike about horror movies. I really like the fact that watching a horror movie gets your heart racing and adrenaline up! It also pulls you closer to the people around you. However, I do dislike the feeling of being scared! The project asks me to include a link to one of my favorite songs generally associated with horror movies. I included a link to the song "Tiptoe Through The Tulips". This song gives me the CHILLS when I hear it. The last slide explains that there is a wide diversity of transitions in horror movies. The editing may be slow until something jumps out at you, than the editing becomes fast and violent!
