Genre Research: Parasite
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
This movie, I'd say, is the most interesting one out of all. This movie is written in Korean, and is based on a family in Korea that slowly starts clinging onto this wealthy family. I assume the name parasite originates from the parasitic behavior in the movie. This movie may seem like nothing special for people who speak this language. Just another horror movie. However for people who don't speak Korean, like myself, the entire effect of the movie is dependent on the subtitles. Every word that is written or spoken is an important detail, and it would be impossible to follow the movie without them. Personally, I love to read, so words have a bigger effect on me than movies ever could. This movie, like my short film, relies on the power of words. There are some sentences that leave your eyes wide and the hair on the back of your neck standing up because of how creepy they are. I love this element for my movie. The "words effect" seems to be becoming more conventional in modern day horror movies!
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
Like I said, I love to read! The fact that this movie was written out almost like a book was a huge appeal for me. Another thing that appealed to me was the fact that this movie is something that can happen in real life. I find that movies with unrealistic monsters and effects don't quite reach their audience as much as realistic movies do. This movie used real people as actors and actresses, and acted out a 'possible' real-life situation.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?
As realistic as this movie was, I found that I couldn't relate to it. Most horror movies are not made for the audience to relate to, but I like these ones the best. For example, the movie "Hush" is about a girl in the woods who is being stalked from the outside of her home by a killer. Even though I am not this women, I can still picture it in my head, and put myself in her shoes. THAT is the element of fear coming out. In this movie, yes-it was beyond freaky and scary, but could I imagine myself in their position? No, I cannot. This, in a way, detaches me from the film itself.
