Genre Research: Sci-Fi & Sad

Science Fiction:

Common CAMS in the Genre?

Point of View shots are frequent because the characters are constantly in a lab or working with technology, so it always shows their point of view of a computer screen, or what they are observing on the cameras. There are also many wide shots to show the entire scene of action.

Common CLAMPS in the Genre?

There are lots of special effects on the actors because most of the time, they are observing creatures from different worlds and dimensions. Directors also design people and robots to look like aliens and other extinct creatures. Some scenes are poorly lit because they are either exploring an abandoned area or focused on a small piece of technology, which does not allow for much light. The sets are very diversely designed for Sci-Fi movies. It ranges from Jurassic Park to The Meg.

Common Editing in the Genre?

The editing varies as well, but most of the time, there is slow paced editing because it gives the audience a better and more detailed chance to observe each scene.  Eye line matches are in frequent use to show what the characters are looking at.

Examples of Films in this Genre:

-The Meg

-Jurassic Park

- Guardians of the galaxy

Common sound in the Genre?

The sound is very technological (Electronic) and you can experience hearing sounds you would in a lab, such as computer sounds, printing sounds, the typing of a keyboard, sound effects on animals and aliens, and in some movies, superhero sound effects.

Elements that you like in this Genre?

I love the discovery of new things: Aliens and Space, even if it is fake. Guardians of the galaxy has many fake creatures but I still find it so intriguing.

Elements you dislike in this Genre?

I don't like movies that are mainly science-based, or things that could happen in real life. The meg is about a "Megalodon" shark that once existed, and it freaks me out so much to know that they may roam our oceans.

Sad:

Common CAMS in this Genre?

Most of the time, these movies use close ups in order to see a character's emotion on their face. Over the shoulder shots are also useful to show what is upsetting the character.

Common CLAMPS in this Genre?

Sad movies can be any type of setting, anywhere, in anyplace. The most common sad movies are modern day death stories. These stories may reach our modern generations better than old or fictional movies. They might take place in a hospital, or maybe a doctors office in order to emphasize the patients death. This movie can also contain war scenes or fight scenes of some sorts.

Common Editing in this Genre?

There may be many long takes, as you want to capture the full emotional rollercoaster of a movie scene. However in urgent and stressed parts of films, it may have fast paced editing to show the amount of stress and pressure in the air. There are also dissolving between shots to show just how fast time can seem. These dissolving transitions may also create a slow, heavy effect.

Examples of films from this Genre:

- Miracles From Heaven

- 6 feet apart

-The Fault in our Stars

Common sound in this Genre?

Sound is slow, sometimes even the ”blues” music. This heavily impacts the way a audience feels, as when they hear a sad song, it makes them sad. There are few moments of intense music during intense scenes until something disruptive or death occurs.

Elements you like in this Genre?

I love to watch sad movies because they show me how rough things can be, and they make me appreciate the little things in life that I may take for granted. For movies where the characters are sick, it can make you look at life from a different angle.

Elements you dislike in this Genre?

I don't typically like sad things, because I hate to cry, and I try to dispel sad emotions.
