Title Research: Silent Hill
I got this movie from Watch the Titles Website.
- What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?
The titles that are displayed are the cast titles. Most of them include the name of the actor who plays that role, and in between, they will list other names that went into to the production.
- What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
Images of each actor. I have a feeling that the faces of these actors are ones to remember throughout the film, so the designers may want the audience to have a first look.
- What connotations do these images carry?
These images carry a scary connotation. They are black and white images with 'something' splattered upon them. This is most likely to scare the audience and set the theme of the movie down.
- How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?
Looking at the title sequence, the designers make it very clear that this movie is a horror movie. From the gloomy filter, to the transitions between each picture that show a blood-splattered, horror written room, this is clearly the opening sequence to a horror movie.
- What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
If the target audience is one that is looking to watch a horror movie, than the dark images, black and white filters with blood on them, and the font of the title "Silent Hill" will definitely draw them in. They may also see that the title sequence is based around a messy horror room, drawing them in further.
- How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.
Technology has been used here to filter each picture, and animate a drawn room and place each title around this room. This is a completely made-up setting that is 100% produced by technology, which is so cool to me. The technology and design team took a few titles and decided to animate a whole room around it.
