Genre Decision Blog
I had a tough time deciding between two Genres, as far as which one my film would fall under. I could not decide between Horror or Thriller. My film is a "scary movie" to look at it broadly. However, the things that occur are not necessarily "scary movie conventions". What this means, you are normally able to tell if a movie is scary by certain things that occur, like jump scares, blood, or scary figures. But, my film will only contain one of these things. The reason I am not including these things is because I want my movie to represent the impact of words. The main "scare" in my movie will be a single text. These words will absolutely break the movie into chaos. I want the thrill of these words to reach my audience. This brings me to my original contradiction, is my film a "Horror" movie or a "Thriller".
I decided, that I will label my movie as a Horror Movie. I have several reasons for this. The first is, you may feel "thrill" in a Horror movie. It is normal for the audience to feel thrill in this Genre, especially a suspenseful film. However, it is rare for an audience to feel "horror" in a Thriller. Thrillers are meant to bring excitement and adventure, and rare moments of fear, but never horror. Therefore, I feel that a horror movie is a better suit Genre title for my film. Aside from this, my movie will contain a scary figure (another convention) and many camera angles typically found in these types of movies. There may not be much "excitement", but I'll be sure to make the audience's heart race !
